Will Amari

A few words from Will:

I am the newest addition to the WHLC family Will Amari and I am from Fort Myers Florida.  Although there are only a handful of people that are truly from Florida, I called Florida home since 1992, and because I lived in Florida longer than any place I have ever lived.

I was born in Mt Clemens Michigan, but only lived there for five weeks, you see my dad was wanted by the FB…I am sorry that is a different story.  My father served our country in the U.S. Air Force for 24 years, so naturally I moved a lot, some say more that a lot, fact is I went to five high schools in 4 years.  So you would think that having moved that much, one would want to find a place to live and stay there…you would think!  Well having lived like a gypsy for almost 19 years, I decided I hadn’t moved enough, so I too joined the Air Force, I was stationed in Texas, (everyone goes there) Massachusetts, Colorado and Mississippi, and that was only four and a half years of service to our country.  I was in what, at the time was considered a critical career field, I was an Air Traffic Controller, so when it was time to reenlist, they told me I was going to get a boat load of money and go to the base of my choice.  You chose three bases and they were suppose to send you to one of them, so I put in for Williams Air Force Base in Chandler Arizona, Luke Air Force Base in Glendale Arizona and Davis Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson Arizona.  My dad retired in Arizona if you hadn’t guessed that, anyway to make a long story even longer, I got my orders and the base they assigned me to was not in Arizona, not even close…heck not even close to this country!!!!  The reenlistment dude handed me my orders and I quote “Congratulations, you are going to Kadena Air Force Base in Okinawa, your first choice”.  I am not the greatest speller in the world, I thank the good Lord above for spell check, but no matter how I try and screw up the word Arizona I still can’t get it to spell Okinawa.  So being the hot headed 23 year old Sicilian Air Traffic Controller I was, I said I could make more money as a civilian controller and off I went.  Did I mention Ronald Regan fired all the civilian Air Traffic Controllers for being a member of PATCO, Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization of which I was a member?  So I looked for another career.  I started selling cars at Bayes Ford in Yuba City California when a Program Director who was looking for a car, told me I had a good voice and a good sense of humor I should get into radio, I said “hire me” so he did.  The rest, as they say is history.

I am married and between my wife Susan and me, we have 12 grandchildren and one great grand child.  Now before we are referred to as “those geezers from Florida”, the great grand child came with my oldest daughter’s husband.  We have a family owned landscaping business in Fort Myers that when our house is sold will go to our kids.

Susan and I found this area when we made a wrong turn off 441 in Franklin in September of 2005 and as most everyone that I have talked to here have vowed…“someday we will live there”.   Needless to say when I saw the ad for this position in one of our trade magazines I was ecstatic.

As far as my tastes in music, I have one of the most eclectic music collections you will ever find, Van Halen, Stevie Wonder, AC/DC, Don Williams, Rachmaninoff, Jean Luc Ponte, Manheim Steamroller, Mark Chestnut, Rickey Scaggs, I could go on but you get the point, I just plain love music.  I think I admire the talent it takes to make the music more than the music itself.  I play guitar, bass guitar, drums, and piano just enough to make our dog Bailey howl, so I keep that to myself.

My hobbies include riding, Susan and I have our own Harley-Davidsons, so when it gets a wee bit warmer you will see us on the road…I am the bald guy, she is the Harley riding goddess.  I LOVEEEEEEEEE to cook, never had one ounce of formal training but consider myself a casual gourmet.   By that I mean my presentation is simple, a plate with food on it, good food.

We are so happy to make Highlands-Cashiers our home and look forward to truly being part of this community, because frankly if someday Chuck and Wanda decide I am not the cats meow, we plan on stayin' right here.
